Sarah Plimpton wurde 1939 in New York geboren. Nach dem BA am Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts, studierte sie an der Harvard Medical School in Cambridge von  1958-61. Im Jahr darauf zog Plimpton nach Paris, wo sie mit Künstlern wie Tal Coat und De Staël verkehrte. 1981 ging sie wieder nach New York und studierte dort von 1982-85 grafische Kunst am Pratt Institute. Plimpton arbeitet sowohl im Gebiet der Radierung als auch der Typographie: In ihren Werken setzt sich die Künstlerin mit der Beziehung zwischen Wort und Bild oder Schreiben und Malen auseinander. In ihren Büchern kombiniert sie zum Beispiel Wörter und Formen mit der Materialität des Buches und dem Aufdruck. Während den letzen 30 Jahren hat sie eine eigene abstrakte Formensprache entwickelt, stellenweise ganz konkret, indem gewisse Buchstaben in suprematistischem Design repräsentiert werden.
